INS Taragiri Commissioned: Indian Navy Inducts Advanced Stealth Warship in Visakhapatnam

India marked a major boost to its naval strength as the stealth warship ‘Taragiri’ was commissioned into the Indian Navy on Friday in Visakhapatnam. The ceremony was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

State-of-the-Art Stealth Warship

The newly inducted INS Taragiri is equipped with advanced stealth capabilities and modern weapon systems, making it a formidable addition to India’s maritime forces.

Key features include:

  • Supersonic surface-to-surface missiles
  • Medium-range surface-to-air missiles
  • Advanced anti-submarine warfare systems
  • Cutting-edge combat management systems

These capabilities enable the warship to effectively counter multiple threats across sea, air, and underwater domains.

Boost to India’s Maritime Power

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described Taragiri as a “state-of-the-art warship” and said its commissioning reflects India’s growing maritime strength.

He emphasized that the Indian Navy symbolizes India’s values, commitment, and global responsibility, and the induction of Taragiri will further strengthen its operational capabilities.

Dual Role: Combat and Humanitarian Missions

The warship is designed for:

  • High-intensity combat operations
  • Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions

Its versatile mission profile makes it suitable for responding to emergencies both in India and abroad.

Built Under ‘Make in India’ Push

INS Taragiri was constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, representing a new-generation upgrade over earlier warship designs.

  • Over 75% indigenous content used
  • Reflects India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing

Rajnath Singh praised MDL for its consistent role in building advanced naval platforms and strengthening India’s defence ecosystem.

Rising Defence Capabilities and Exports

The induction comes amid a broader expansion of India’s defence sector. According to the Ministry of Defence:

  • Defence exports reached ₹38,424 crore in FY 2025–26
  • Marking a 62.66% increase year-on-year

Significant investments are being made in:

  • Warships and missile systems
  • Fighter aircraft
  • Long-endurance drones
  • Electronic warfare systems

Symbol of National Strength

Calling Taragiri a symbol of national pride and collective resolve, Rajnath Singh said the warship will send a strong message globally about India’s capabilities, resilience, and commitment to security.
