The Government of India has strengthened the India 6G Alliance (B6GA), making significant progress towards the goal of 6G technology development and global leadership. The government has also released a spectrum roadmap for 6G services, while several initiatives have been launched for research, standardisation, and testbed development. This information was given by Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr. Chandra Shekhar Pemmasani, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
India becomes 90th member of 6G alliance
The Union Minister said that by July 15, 2026, 90 members have joined the India 6G Alliance (B6GA). It is a forum driven by industry and academia, including telecom service providers, equipment manufacturers, startups, R&D institutions, academic institutions and other stakeholders from the telecom sector.
Seven working groups are working
The India 6G Alliance has formed seven working groups to work on key areas such as 6G technology, spectrum, applications and usage, revenue models, equipment and components, green and sustainability initiatives and outreach. The alliance aims to enhance collaboration between industry, academia and startups, encourage domestic research and innovation, and develop advanced research and testbeds in line with India’s 6G vision.
Spectrum roadmap released for 6G
The Spectrum Working Group has prepared the report ‘Spectrum Roadmap for 6G in India’. Based on this, the Department of Telecommunications has released the official spectrum roadmap for 6G services after consultation with various stakeholders.
6G terahertz testbed will be built in Kolkata
A three-year project has been approved from the Telecom Technology Development Fund under the Digital India Fund. Under this, a 6G terahertz testbed will be established at the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER), Kolkata. IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Patna are also partners in this project. Under the project, a high-data-rate line-of-sight link has been successfully demonstrated at the India Mobile Congress 2025.
India’s active participation in international forums
The government said that India has made several important suggestions in the IMT-2030 framework of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), including ‘ubiquitous connectivity’ for 6G. Besides, Indian participation on global standardisation platforms like 3GPP, ITU and OneM2M is also being promoted.
Startups and MSMEs will get support
Under the Technology Development and Investment Promotion (TDIP) scheme of the Department of Telecommunications, financial assistance is being provided to Startups and MSMEs for activities like membership fees, participation in international standardisation meetings, organising such meetings in India, pilot testing and validation of telecom products.
