Govt Plans Boost to Induction Cooking Equipment Manufacturing to Cut LPG Dependence

Date:

The Centre is planning to increase domestic production of induction heaters and electric cooking appliances to reduce dependence on LPG consumption amid global energy uncertainties.

A high-level meeting involving officials from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, the Power Ministry, and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade was held on Friday to discuss strategies for scaling up production.

Focus on Reducing LPG Consumption

The move aims to:

  • Promote electric cooking alternatives
  • Reduce reliance on cooking gas (LPG)
  • Strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity

Officials noted a sharp rise in demand for induction heaters and related appliances following disruptions caused by the ongoing West Asia conflict.

Supply Chain Concerns Amid Global Tensions

The initiative comes as the government assesses risks to imports of:

  • Oil and gas
  • Petrochemical products

due to supply chain disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions, especially around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for nearly 20% of global energy supplies.

Diversifying Energy Sources

To mitigate risks, India has already diversified its energy imports, increasing procurement from:

  • Russia
  • African nations like Nigeria and Angola
  • The United States for natural gas supplies

Additionally, import duties on certain petrochemical products have been reduced to maintain supply stability and ease cost pressures.

Push for Self-Reliance

Sources indicated that the government’s broader strategy is to:

  • Ensure availability of essential commodities
  • Reduce import dependence
  • Build resilience against global uncertainties

Rising Global Uncertainty

Energy concerns have intensified after reported damage to a major LNG facility in Qatar and escalating tensions in West Asia. Statements by Donald Trump regarding potential military escalation and responses from Abbas Araghchi have further added to uncertainty in the region.

Long-Term Strategy for Energy Security

Officials emphasized that if the conflict persists, India must be prepared with alternative solutions like electric cooking to reduce pressure on LPG supply and ensure energy security.
