Telangana Tops India in Cost of Treating Major Illnesses: NSO Report

Date:

HYDERABAD: Telangana has been found to be one of the most expensive states in India for treating major illnesses, with hospital costs much higher than the national average, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO). The report shows that the state has the highest treatment costs in four key categories—heart diseases, infections, injuries, and eye problems. It also ranks among the top three to five most expensive states for several other illnesses.

For example, the average cost of treating heart disease is around ₹95,095, which is about 70% higher than the national average. Similarly, treatment for infections (₹24,496), injuries (₹77,518), and eye conditions (₹28,897) is 50% to 77% more expensive compared to the rest of the country.

High costs are not limited to these diseases. Treatment for cancer (₹94,047), blood disorders (₹38,258), endocrine diseases (₹50,000), and neurological or mental health conditions (₹79,769) is also much higher than average. Overall, many treatments in Telangana are 40% to 80% more expensive, showing that the issue is widespread.

Experts say there are several reasons behind these high costs. One major factor is the heavy dependence on private hospitals, where treatment is usually more expensive than in government hospitals. Due to limited facilities in public healthcare, many patients have no choice but to go to private hospitals.

Doctors also point out that the increased use of advanced tests and treatments has pushed up costs. While these improve care, sometimes too many tests are done, which adds to the final bill.

Another concern is the high out-of-pocket spending, meaning patients pay directly from their own pockets. Reports suggest that nearly 10% of household loans in Telangana are taken for medical expenses, showing how costly treatment has become for families.

Experts have also raised concerns about the growing commercialisation of healthcare, where treatment decisions may sometimes be influenced by profit. The lack of clear pricing and strict regulation in private hospitals has made the situation worse.

Because of this, experts are calling for urgent action, such as improving government hospitals, controlling private hospital charges, making billing more transparent, and expanding schemes like Aarogyasri.

As Telangana continues to grow as a healthcare hub, experts say it is important to ensure that treatment remains affordable, so that people are not forced into financial stress while seeking medical care.
