Ministry of Defence Clears ₹5,083 Crore Defence Procurement for Coast Guard Helicopters, Navy Missile Systems

In a major boost to India’s maritime and naval defence capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth ₹5,083 crore for the acquisition of six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk-III (Maritime Role) for the Indian Coast Guard and VL-Shtil surface-to-air missile systems for the Indian Navy.

The agreements were signed at South Block in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

HAL Awarded ₹2,901 Crore Contract for ALH Mk-III

Under the ‘Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)’ category, a ₹2,901 crore contract has been awarded to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bengaluru, for the supply of six ALH Mk-III (Maritime Role) helicopters.

The contract package includes:

  • Mission-specific operational equipment

  • Engineering support services

  • Performance-based logistics support

These twin-engine helicopters are designed for maritime operations and can operate from both coastal bases and ships deployed at sea.

Enhanced Coastal and Offshore Security

The induction of ALH Mk-III helicopters will significantly strengthen the Coast Guard’s capability to protect:

  • Offshore installations

  • Artificial islands

  • Fishing communities

  • Marine ecosystems

The advanced platforms will enhance surveillance, search-and-rescue operations, and rapid response capabilities in India’s maritime zones.

Boost to Domestic Defence Manufacturing

The project is expected to benefit over 200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) involved in component supply and manufacturing. Officials estimate the creation of nearly 65 lakh man-hours of employment through this initiative.

The procurement reinforces the government’s commitment to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ by promoting indigenous defence production.

₹2,182 Crore Missile Deal for Indian Navy

Separately, the Ministry signed a ₹2,182 crore agreement with Russia’s JSC Rosoboronexport for the procurement of VL-Shtil surface-to-air missile systems and related equipment.

Strengthening Naval Air Defence Shield

The VL-Shtil missile system will enhance the air defence capability of frontline naval warships, enabling protection against multiple aerial threats. The system is designed to provide:

  • All-weather interception capability

  • Rapid target engagement

  • Greater survivability in high-threat maritime environments

Strengthening India’s Maritime Security Architecture

With the acquisition of advanced maritime helicopters and air defence missile systems, India continues to modernise its coastal and naval forces. These contracts mark another significant step toward enhancing operational readiness and securing India’s strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region.
