Telangana CM Unveils Plan for Mega Health City Near Hyderabad Airport

Date:

Hyderabad: In a major push to position the city as a global healthcare destination, A. Revanth Reddy has announced plans to develop a world-class Health City near the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, a move aimed at strengthening medical infrastructure and boosting international medical tourism.*

The announcement was made during the inauguration of a state-of-the-art 400-bed facility by Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad’s Financial District, where the Chief Minister highlighted the government’s vision to transform Hyderabad into a leading global hub for healthcare services. According to officials, the proposed Health City will be part of a larger urban expansion project and is expected to attract both domestic and international patients seeking advanced medical treatment.

Focus on Medical Tourism and Global Connectivity

A key component of this ambitious plan is the creation of a “green channel” for international patients, which the state government is currently discussing with the Centre. This initiative is intended to simplify travel procedures and improve accessibility for patients coming from abroad, particularly from regions like the Middle East, where demand for quality healthcare services is high. Authorities also acknowledged that limited direct international connectivity remains a challenge, and efforts are underway to address this issue.

Expansion of Emergency and Public Health Infrastructure

Alongside infrastructure development, the government has outlined a broader strategy to upgrade healthcare services across Telangana. Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha revealed that the state plans to expand ambulance services significantly from 30 to 100 units, ensuring faster emergency response across urban and semi-urban areas. Additionally, there are plans to establish 40 trauma care centres strategically across Hyderabad, each designed to provide timely medical assistance within a defined radius.

The state is also focusing on preventive healthcare and disease management. Officials confirmed that non-communicable disease (NCD) clinics have been set up in all districts, offering diagnostic services, medicines, and specialist consultations. Furthermore, a dedicated cancer registry has been launched to monitor disease patterns and improve long-term healthcare planning. The government is also working on establishing daycare centres in remote and underserved regions, ensuring that quality healthcare reaches even the most distant communities.

Rising Health Concerns Drive Urgency

The urgency behind these initiatives is underscored by recent health data. According to the “Health of the Nation 2026” report by Apollo Hospitals, there is a sharp rise in non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension in Telangana, with a growing impact on younger populations. Experts have emphasized the need for early screening, advanced diagnostics, and the integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare systems to tackle this emerging crisis effectively.

Medical experts, including Prathap C. Reddy, have pointed out that AI-driven technologies could significantly reduce diagnosis time, especially in critical cases like heart attacks. However, they also stressed that clinical expertise remains essential alongside technological advancements.

The proposed Health City is expected to complement Hyderabad’s already strong life sciences and pharmaceutical ecosystem, further reinforcing its reputation as a centre for medical excellence. With large-scale investments, improved infrastructure, and policy support, the initiative is poised to enhance healthcare accessibility, create employment opportunities, and attract global investment.

While no specific timeline has been announced yet, the project represents a significant step toward redefining Hyderabad’s role in global healthcare and medical tourism, aligning with the state’s broader vision of sustainable urban and economic growth.
