Under India’s BRICS 2026 Chairmanship, the BRICS 2026 meeting of the Disaster Risk Reduction Group (DRRG) will be hosted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Government of India, from 3 to 5 June 2026 in Puri, Odisha.
The meeting, themed “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Collaboration and Sustainability”, will bring together senior officials and technical experts from BRICS member countries namely Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates to strengthen cooperation in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
The discussions during the meeting will focus on key areas such as community-based disaster risk reduction, financing for disaster risk management, multi-hazard early warning systems, resilient infrastructure, nature-based solutions and use of science, technology and innovation to strengthen disaster resilience.
The meeting is expected to further strengthen BRICS cooperation in building resilient societies and sustainable disaster risk reduction frameworks through shared learning, cooperation and exchange of experiences in addressing common disaster challenges.
Odisha State has been selected as the host State in view of its globally recognized disaster preparedness systems, especially cyclone management, early warning dissemination, evacuation planning and community based response mechanisms with a record of zero casualties.
As part of the program, delegates will witness a demonstration on water rescue preparedness and response by the Odisha State Disaster Response Force (ODRAF) at Ramachandi. Delegates will also interact with trained community volunteers at a program organized by the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) to observe Odisha’s best practices in coastal disaster response and community preparedness. Additionally, delegates will visit Konark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The inaugural session and key events will be attended by Odisha Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Manjhi, Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Shri Suresh Pujari, NDMA Member and Head of Department Dr. Krishna Swarup Vatsa and officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of External Affairs.
