Industrial Production Registers Robust Growth in April, Manufacturing Sector Shines

Date:

The growth rate of the All-India Index of Industrial Production (IIP) stood at 4.9 percent year-on-year in April. During this period, the manufacturing sector delivered the strongest performance. This information was provided in data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Monday.

For the first time, the Ministry has released data utilizing a new base year of 2022-23. Previously, the base year used for the data was 2011-12. According to government statistics, the growth rate in the manufacturing sector was 6.2 percent in April. In the water supply, sewerage, and waste management sector, it stood at 6.6 percent, while in electricity and gas supply, it was 4.9 percent. Conversely, the growth rate in the mining and quarrying sector was a negative 5.1 percent.

Out of the 23 industry groups within the manufacturing sector, 17 recorded positive growth in April 2026 compared to April 2025. The top three positive contributors for the month of April 2026 included the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers (12.7 percent); the manufacture of electrical equipment (19.2 percent); and the manufacture of machinery and equipment (12.9 percent).

With the objective of better reflecting the current structure and dynamics of the industrial sector, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has revised the base year of the All-India Index of Industrial Production from 2011-12 to 2022-23. The revised series incorporates an updated item basket, a modified weighting structure, and broader sectoral coverage to facilitate a better understanding of recent developments in industrial activity within the economy.

This exercise regarding the revision of the base year for the All-India Index of Industrial Production was conducted under the supervision of the Technical Advisory Committee on the Index of Industrial Production (TAC-IIP), which was constituted specifically for this purpose. The Committee’s report was released on May 25, 2026, laying the foundation for a more robust, relevant, and comprehensive system for measuring industrial production in India.
