Telangana Seeks Procurement of 30 LMT Boiled Rice from Centre for Rabi Season

Date:

Hyderabad, April 2026: The Telangana government has urged the Centre to procure 30 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of boiled (parboiled) rice from the state during the ongoing Yasangi (rabi) season, citing a strong harvest and rising national demand.

CM Revanth Reddy Meets Union Minister

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, along with Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, met Union Food Minister Pralhad Joshi in New Delhi to present the proposal.

The Centre has given an in-principle approval for the procurement request, indicating a positive response to the state’s demand.

Strong Paddy Output Drives Proposal

The state informed the Centre that:

  • Around 90 LMT of paddy production is expected this rabi season
  • A large portion of the crop is suitable for parboiled rice milling
  • Telangana is ready to supply:
    • 30 LMT parboiled rice (5% broken)
    • 5 LMT raw rice (10% broken)

Officials highlighted that demand for boiled rice is increasing across the country, making Telangana a key contributor to the national food supply.

Push for Pending Dues Clearance

During the meeting, the state also raised financial concerns, urging the Centre to release pending dues of ₹1,468.94 crore related to earlier procurement.

The government said clearing these arrears is crucial to:

  • Maintain smooth procurement operations
  • Ensure timely payments to farmers

Demand to Resume Fortified Rice Scheme

The Chief Minister also requested the Centre to resume distribution of fortified rice kernels (FRK), which had been supplied through:

  • Schools
  • Hostels
  • ICDS centres

The scheme plays a key role in addressing anaemia and malnutrition among children.

Telangana Positions Itself as Key Supplier

Officials said that Telangana remains one of India’s largest paddy-producing states, with efficient procurement systems that ensure farmers receive payments within 48 hours.

The latest proposal reflects the state’s strategy to:

  • Support farmers through assured procurement
  • Strengthen its role in national food security
  • Align production with market demand
