Rahul Gandhi’s Foreign Visit Sparks Fresh BJP–Congress Clash

Date:

A fresh political confrontation erupted on Wednesday after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson NV Subhash criticised Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his upcoming visit to Germany during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

Speaking in Hyderabad, Subhash questioned the timing and intent behind Gandhi’s foreign trip, stating that it reflects a lack of seriousness towards parliamentary duties. “The LoP, Rahul Gandhi, is going abroad during the winter session,” he remarked, emphasising that Prime Minister Narendra Modi consistently prioritises Parliament, attends sessions regularly, and answers questions from members.

The BJP spokesperson further said that while several opposition leaders in the past have travelled abroad and “made India proud,” Rahul Gandhi’s foreign visits often trigger controversy. “Unfortunately, when Rahul Gandhi goes abroad, he belittles the image of India,” Subhash alleged, hinting at the Congress leader’s previous international interactions where he criticised the government on issues such as democratic backsliding, institutional pressure and social disharmony.

The Congress has not yet officially responded to Subhash’s remarks, but the party has previously maintained that international engagements are part of global political outreach and not aimed at undermining the country.

Rahul Gandhi’s overseas trips frequently become a flashpoint between the BJP and the Congress, with the ruling party accusing him of speaking against India on foreign soil, and the opposition countering that criticism of the government does not equate to criticism of the nation.
