Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi has launched a six-month Primary Teacher Education (PTE) Certificate (Bridge) course aimed at promoting quality education at the primary level. The objective of this course is to equip teachers with the skills and capabilities to provide students with better education and opportunities for lifelong learning.
This bridge course was launched on Wednesday and will be conducted through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). According to officials, the course will assist teachers in adopting child-centric, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate teaching methods, thereby strengthening the quality of primary and foundational education.
This course has been specifically designed for working primary school teachers who hold a B.Ed. degree. It will provide them with the opportunity to obtain the necessary certification to teach primary classes. Officials stated that this is a special professional training program that will help teachers develop the skills and competencies required to effectively teach students in classes 1 to 5.
This course has been designed in alignment with the framework of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). It comprises academic study along with at least 10 days of online contact classes and 20 days of school-based training.
The objective of the course is to enable teachers to understand the diverse learning needs of young children and to teach accordingly. It includes six theoretical subjects and school-based practical training (practicum) to foster better synergy between teaching theory and classroom instruction.
According to officials, in its judgment delivered on April 8, 2024, in the Devesh Sharma vs. Union of India case, the Supreme Court authorized the NCTE to design a bridge course for primary teachers who had been appointed but did not possess the D.El.Ed. qualification. Subsequently, this bridge course was developed for serving primary teachers who had been appointed to teach primary classes (Classes 1 to 5) between June 28, 2018, and August 11, 2023, based on their B.Ed. degrees.
This course is intended for teachers covered under the NCTE notification dated June 28, 2018. It will emphasize foundational education through both theoretical and practical training. Instruction will be conducted in Hindi and English, while teachers may answer the examination in any of the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule. According to the Ministry of Education, this initiative will help enhance the capabilities of primary school teachers and strengthen quality and inclusive education.
