From Lab to Market: ICMR Transfers Three Indigenous Biomedical Technologies to Accelerate Cancer Care and Vaccine Innovation

Date:

Hyderabad: Under its ‘Medical Innovation Patent Mitra‘ initiative, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has licensed three indigenously developed biomedical technologies to Emcure Pharmaceuticals Limited and Biological E Limited. This marks a significant step towards bringing government-funded healthcare innovations to the commercial stage.

These technologies include SHetA2, a novel anti-HPV therapeutic candidate for treating cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), which has been licensed to Emcure Pharmaceuticals. Jointly developed by scientists from ICMR-NICPR and the University of Oklahoma, this therapy specifically targets pre-cancerous and cervical cancer cells caused by HPV while leaving healthy cells unharmed.

Together, these technologies can strengthen India’s efforts in cancer prevention and the control of infectious diseases, while also advancing the indigenous development of next-generation medicines and vaccines.

ICMR has also licensed two next-generation vaccine technologies, developed by ICMR-NIRBI, Kolkata, to Biological E. The candidates are aimed at preventing typhoid and other major enteric bacterial infections caused by Salmonella and Shigella.

Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the ICMR and Secretary of the Department of Health Research, stated that technology transfer through industry partnerships strengthens the organization’s commitment to transforming publicly funded research into affordable healthcare solutions, while also enhancing India’s self-reliance in biomedical innovation.
