Railway Infrastructure Upgrade: 55,000 km Tracks Renewed to Improve Safety and Speed

In a major push towards modernising the country’s rail infrastructure, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has highlighted that over 55,000 kilometres of railway tracks have been renewed across India, significantly improving train safety, speed, and overall passenger experience.

The large-scale track renewal, carried out over the past decade, is part of a broader effort by Indian Railways to upgrade its network and meet the growing demand for faster and more reliable transportation. According to the PMO, these improvements are already translating into smoother journeys, reduced delays, and enhanced operational efficiency.

Modernisation Driving Safer Travel

Officials emphasised that the track renewal programme has played a key role in strengthening rail safety standards. By replacing ageing tracks with modern, high-quality rails, the likelihood of technical failures and accidents has been significantly reduced.

In addition to renewal, the adoption of advanced testing techniques and mechanised maintenance systems has improved monitoring and upkeep of railway tracks. These technologies help detect faults early, ensuring timely repairs and preventing disruptions in train services.

Faster and More Efficient Rail Network

One of the most significant outcomes of this initiative is the increase in train speeds and operational efficiency. The laying of nearly 44,000 km of long rail panels has reduced the number of joints in tracks, resulting in smoother train movement and less wear and tear.

Moreover, the introduction of stronger rails—such as 60-kg rails across more than 80,000 km of the network—has enabled trains to carry heavier loads and run at higher speeds. This has not only improved passenger services but also enhanced freight capacity, which is critical for economic growth.

Continuous Upgradation Efforts

Track renewal is part of an ongoing process under Indian Railways, where infrastructure is regularly upgraded based on factors such as track condition, usage intensity, and safety requirements. The government has prioritised sections with heavy traffic to ensure that high-density routes remain safe and efficient.

Over the years, these upgrades have also led to a notable increase in the proportion of railway routes capable of handling higher speeds of 110 kmph and above, reflecting the system’s growing efficiency and modernisation.

The improved railway network is expected to have a broader economic impact by enhancing connectivity, reducing logistics costs, and supporting industrial growth. Faster and more reliable train services benefit not only passengers but also industries that rely on railways for transportation of goods.
