Six Oscars for ‘One Battle After Another’

The big-budget comedy-thriller inspired by Vineland by Thomas Pynchon dominated the ceremony.

The film won awards in several major categories, including:

  • Best Picture

  • Best Director – Paul Thomas Anderson

  • Best Supporting Actor – Sean Penn

  • Best Adapted Screenplay

  • Best Editing

  • Best Casting (first Oscar awarded in this category)

This marked a major milestone for Anderson’s career.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Emotional Speech

While accepting the award, Paul Thomas Anderson said he wrote the film for his children.

“I wrote this film for my children as a way to apologise for the chaos in the world we are handing over to them,” he said.

He added that he hopes the younger generation will help bring back “common sense and decency” in society.

First Oscar Win for Anderson

Although Anderson has previously received Oscar nominations for films like:

  • Boogie Nights

  • There Will Be Blood

  • Phantom Thread

this marks his first Oscar win after multiple nominations.

Sean Penn Wins Best Supporting Actor

Actor Sean Penn won the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in One Battle After Another. However, he was unable to attend the ceremony.

Presenter Kieran Culkin joked during the event that “Sean Penn could not make it tonight — or perhaps didn’t want to.”

Penn won the award after beating fellow nominee Benicio del Toro.

Storyline of the Film

One Battle After Another is a crime-thriller that follows the story of a former revolutionary named Bob.

After 16 years, Bob confronts his old enemy Colonel Lockjaw in a dangerous mission to rescue his daughter Willa, leading to a gripping conflict that drives the film’s narrative.

The film’s critical acclaim and multiple Oscar wins have further cemented its place as one of the most celebrated films of the year.
