PM Modi Calls for Global Institutional Reforms at U.N. General Assembly

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 79th U.N. General Assembly on September 22, 2024, advocating for critical reforms in global institutions to ensure peace and development worldwide. His remarks were delivered during the Summit of the Future, which aims to reinvigorate multilateral cooperation in light of contemporary challenges.

The two-day summit serves as a prelude to the high-level meeting of world leaders set to commence at the United Nations. This initiative follows a call to action from U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who urged leaders to commit to revitalizing the aging frameworks that underpin global governance.

Modi also engaged with supporters in Long Island, New York, where he highlighted his government’s achievements over the past decade and expressed his vision for the future of India. He emphasized the pivotal role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening ties between India and the global community.

In addition to his U.N. activities, Modi participated in the sixth summit of the Quad nations alongside U.S. President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at Biden’s former school, Archmere Academy. The leaders announced several collaborative initiatives, including a new coast guard exercise, the establishment of a logistics network, expanded maritime surveillance, and a project aimed at combating cervical cancer.

As the summit unfolds, the focus on multilateralism and institutional reform is set to be a key theme, with world leaders working together to address pressing global issues and promote a cooperative future.
