In his latest “Mann Ki Baat” radio broadcast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on citizens and organizations across India to actively engage with the newly launched National Anti-Narcotics Helpline ‘Manas’ as part of a concerted effort to combat drug abuse in the country.
During his address, PM Modi spoke about the pressing issue of drug abuse and its impact on families nationwide. “In Mann Ki Baat, I have often discussed the challenges of drugs. Every family worries that their child might be exposed to drugs,” he said, highlighting the pervasive concern that prompted the government to introduce ‘Manas.’
The helpline, which was recently unveiled, features a toll-free number—1933—that provides essential support and information related to drug rehabilitation. “This is a very big step in the fight against drugs,” Modi remarked, emphasizing the initiative’s potential to offer crucial assistance to those seeking help. He encouraged anyone in need of advice on de-addiction or rehabilitation to reach out via the helpline.
PM Modi assured the public that all information shared through ‘Manas’ would be handled with the utmost confidentiality. He also urged individuals to use the helpline to report any drug-related issues, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in the fight against drug abuse. “All the information shared with Manas will be confidential. I urge all the people, families, and organizations involved in making India drug-free to use Manas extensively,” he stated.
The MANAS (Madak Padarth Nisedh Asuchna Kendra) portal, launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 18, includes the toll-free number, a dedicated web portal, a mobile app, and integration with the UMANG app. This multifaceted approach is designed to facilitate 24×7 anonymous communication with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for advice on de-addiction and reporting drug trafficking.
Additionally, in the fight against illicit drug cultivation, the NCB has collaborated with BISAG-N to develop the “MAPDRUGS” portal and mobile app. This innovative tool provides Geographic Information System (GIS) data to aid in identifying and eradicating illegal cultivation sites.
The introduction of ‘Manas’ represents a significant government effort to address the multifaceted issue of drug abuse, offering a comprehensive support system and fostering greater public engagement in the pursuit of a drug-free India.
