India Post Launches Mail Parcel Optimisation Project to Boost Efficiency, Parcel Volumes Rise to 14.5 Crore

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Wednesday said that the Department of Posts has implemented the Mail Parcel Optimisation Project (MPOP) to enhance efficiency and modernise the parcel delivery ecosystem across India.


MPOP to Strengthen Parcel and E-Commerce Network

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, the minister highlighted that under the MPOP initiative:

  • Parcel networks and delivery centres have been rationalised

  • A nationwide road transport network has been operationalised

  • The system is designed to support the growing e-commerce sector

These reforms aim to streamline operations and improve delivery timelines.


Digital Push with Advanced Postal Technology

The government has also introduced the Advanced Postal Technology platform, enabling:

  • Real-time tracking of mail and parcels

  • Digitalisation of postal services

This move is expected to enhance transparency and customer experience.


Parcel Handling Capacity Sees Major Growth

Over the past three years, the Department of Posts has undertaken significant infrastructure upgrades across the country.

As a result:

  • Parcel handling capacity has increased

  • Parcels handled rose from 9.72 crore in FY 2020–21 to 14.5 crore in FY 2024–25

This reflects the growing demand for parcel and logistics services.


Faster Delivery Services Introduced

The minister also announced the launch of new delivery products:

  • 24-hour guaranteed delivery mail

  • 48-hour guaranteed delivery mail

  • 24-hour parcel delivery services

These services currently cover selected domestic routes.


Boost to Cross-Border E-Commerce

To support international trade and exports, the Department of Posts has introduced:

  • International Tracked Packet Service (launched in 2017)

  • Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras to facilitate exports

These initiatives benefit:

  • MSMEs

  • E-commerce sellers

  • Farmers and small businesses


Strategic Partnerships to Expand Reach

The Department has also partnered with:

  • Major e-commerce platforms

  • The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC)

These collaborations aim to strengthen India’s logistics ecosystem and expand market access.


Strengthening India’s Postal Infrastructure

The government’s focus on modernisation, digitalisation, and logistics integration is transforming India Post into a key player in the e-commerce and delivery sector.
