Canada PM Mark Carney Meets EAM S. Jaishankar in New Delhi, Reviews India-Canada Strategic Partnership

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney met India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi during his first official visit to India.

Following the meeting, Dr. Jaishankar said, “It was a pleasure to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney this morning in New Delhi. I appreciate his commitment to building a forward-looking partnership.”


Mark Carney on First Official India Visit

Prime Minister Mark Carney, accompanied by his wife Diana Fox Carney, arrived in Mumbai on February 27 for a four-day visit to India. After attending business and industry engagements in Mumbai, he reached New Delhi on Monday.

Upon arrival in the national capital, Carney posted on X, stating that he looked forward to meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He described Canada and India as “confident and ambitious nations” ready to move forward together, highlighting cooperation in energy, talent, innovation, and artificial intelligence to enhance prosperity and security for their people.


Delegation-Level Talks with PM Modi

Prime Minister Carney also held delegation-level talks with PM Modi at Hyderabad House. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders reviewed progress across multiple pillars of the India-Canada strategic partnership.

The discussions built upon their previous meetings in Kananaskis (June 2025) and Johannesburg (November 2025). Key areas of focus included:

  • Trade and investment

  • Energy cooperation

  • Critical minerals

  • Agriculture

  • Education and research

  • Innovation and technology

  • People-to-people ties


Towards a Constructive and Balanced Partnership

The MEA stated that the visit comes at a crucial phase as bilateral ties move toward normalization. Both Prime Ministers have agreed to advance a constructive and balanced partnership based on mutual respect for each other’s concerns, strong people-to-people relations, and growing economic complementarities.

Officials noted that the ongoing engagement provides an opportunity to reaffirm shared vision and positive momentum in India-Canada relations.


Focus on Business, Trade and Economic Growth

During his Mumbai visit, PM Carney participated in high-level business interactions with Indian and Canadian CEOs, industrialists, financial experts, innovators, educators, and representatives of Canadian pension funds operating in India.

Calling India “the world’s fastest-growing major economy,” Carney emphasized the importance of building partnerships that create new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses. Sharing a video of his arrival in Mumbai, he wrote that the visit aims to deepen economic ties and unlock new avenues of cooperation.

With growing collaboration in trade, technology, energy, and innovation, the India-Canada relationship is poised for renewed engagement and strategic expansion.
