PM Modi to Visit Chennai on October 11 to Launch Projects Worth Over Rs 13,000 Crore

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Chennai on October 11. During the visit, he will inaugurate development projects worth over ₹13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu, launch new initiatives, and lay the foundation stones for several projects. These projects span sectors such as metro rail, highways, railways, ports, petroleum, and scientific research.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will also visit IIT Madras and attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

Chennai Metro and Highway Projects to Strengthen Connectivity

The Prime Minister will open the Poonamallee–Vadapalani section of Chennai Metro’s Phase II, developed with an investment of approximately ₹4,900 crore. The corridor features a unique 3.7-km double-decker structure and advanced signalling systems designed to support driverless operations, improving connectivity between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre.

He will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for National Highway projects worth approximately ₹3,700 crore. These include the 36-km-long, four-lane Vadugapatti-Therkuvenganallur section of NH-744 and the 30-km-long, four-lane Madurai Ring Road section of NH-744A. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the four-lane Tiruvarur bypass on NH-83 to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the region.

Railway, Port and Refinery Projects to Boost Infrastructure

Rail connectivity in Tamil Nadu is set to receive a boost with the dedication of railway projects valued at more than ₹750 crore. The key works include the Karaikal–Peralam railway line and three rail flyovers in Coimbatore and nearby areas. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate five redeveloped railway stations—Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakudi and Namakkal—modernised under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Modi will inaugurate four projects at Chennai Port, including a paved storage yard, four EXIM warehouses, an upgraded cruise terminal and a Seafarers’ Club. Eight major projects will be inaugurated or launched at V.O. Chidambaranar Port to enhance cargo-handling capacity, strengthen logistics, and promote clean maritime energy. He will also inaugurate the Coal Berth-3 project and lay the foundation stone for capital dredging work for the Container Terminal Phase-I, Stage-II at Kamarajar Port.

The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for a ₹1,620 crore Group II/III Lube Oil Base Stocks (LOBS) facility at Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Manali Refinery. Designed to produce 270,000 metric tonnes of lubricant base stocks annually, the project is expected to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity and improve the availability of high-quality raw materials for the lubricants industry.

IIT Madras Brain Centre and School’s Golden Jubilee in Focus

At IIT Madras, Modi will dedicate the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre (SGBC) to the nation and launch a scientific mission to map more than 100 human brains into three-dimensional atlases at cellular resolution, covering stages from foetal development to old age.

He will also release C-STROKE, a human ischaemic stroke atlas featuring more than 1,000 annotated microscopic sections to support research into potential therapeutic targets.

The Prime Minister will conclude his visit by attending the golden jubilee celebrations of the Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai. This event marks the institution’s 50-year contribution to education, academic excellence, and the holistic development of students.
