59th Telangana State-Ranking Chess Tournament Set for May 24 in Hyderabad

Date:

Hyderabad: The 59th State-Level Chess Championship begins in Telangana on May 24. Players from across the state will participate in this competition, providing a great opportunity for Telangana’s hidden chess talents to shine.

This one-day chess tournament will feature players from under-7 to under-17 and open categories (all ages). Both juniors and seniors will play in their respective age groups. Organizers have stated that all matches will be played using the Swiss-system, a common chess rule that determines players’ previous performances in the next round, ensuring fair and equal play.

The event is part of Telangana’s ongoing chess calendar, which regularly hosts ranking tournaments across districts to support player development and strengthen the competitive ecosystem. Hyderabad continues to serve as the central hub for such events, with strong participation from chess academies and school-level players.

According to organisers, the tournament will provide participants with an opportunity to earn official state ranking points, which are crucial for improving ratings and securing qualification for higher-level competitions under the All India Chess Federation (AICF) framework. Strong performances in state-ranking tournaments often play a decisive role in selection for national-level championships.

Officials said the event is designed to promote competitive exposure among young players and help them gain experience in structured tournament environments. Chess in Telangana has seen steady growth in recent years, with increasing participation from school students and junior categories, reflecting the sport’s rising popularity in the state.

Players from several districts will participate in this tournament in Hyderabad, and like last time, it will see a large crowd. Winners and top performers will receive points, certificates, and trophies based on their rankings. The organisers will soon provide information on where the event will be held, how to register for it and the timings of the matches.
