Naidu Calls Google’s $15 Billion Vizag AI Hub a Major Growth Engine for India

Date:

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has described Google’s upcoming $15 billion Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centre hub in Visakhapatnam as a “transformational growth engine” for India’s economy, calling it one of the most significant technology investments in the country’s history. The project, formally launched with the foundation stone ceremony, is expected to reshape India’s digital infrastructure landscape over the next decade.

The mega facility, known as the Google Cloud India AI Hub, will be developed near Visakhapatnam and is planned as one of the largest AI infrastructure projects outside the United States. Spread across nearly 600 acres, the project will include a 1 gigawatt hyperscale data centre campus, designed to handle massive AI workloads, cloud computing services, and global data processing requirements.

Naidu said the project will position Visakhapatnam as a global hub for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and next-generation digital services, adding that it will create new employment opportunities while attracting further foreign investments into Andhra Pradesh. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the state’s long-term vision of becoming a leading destination for high-tech industries in India.

One of India’s Largest Digital Infrastructure Investments

The AI hub is being developed through a collaboration between Google Cloud, AdaniConneX, and Bharti Airtel’s Nxtra, forming a large-scale digital ecosystem combining data centres, connectivity networks, and infrastructure support systems. The project is expected to significantly strengthen India’s position in global cloud and AI services.

Officials confirmed that the hub will also include subsea cable landing infrastructure, which will improve international connectivity and reduce latency for global digital operations. This is expected to make India a more competitive location for high-performance computing and AI-driven enterprises.

According to project timelines, the AI hub will be developed in multiple phases and is expected to become fully operational by September 2028, with further expansion planned over the following years. The scale and scope of the investment make it one of the largest foreign direct investments in India’s technology sector, reflecting growing global confidence in India’s digital economy.

Economic Impact and Job Creation Potential

The project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities across construction, engineering, IT services, and infrastructure development. Experts believe it will also create a strong ripple effect across allied sectors such as real estate, logistics, and renewable energy.

Naidu highlighted that the project will serve as a catalyst for industrial transformation in Andhra Pradesh, similar to the impact of earlier technology hubs in Hyderabad. He said Visakhapatnam could emerge as a global benchmark for AI-driven economic growth, comparable to leading international tech cities.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also described the project as a major milestone in India’s digital journey, stating that it will strengthen the country’s position in AI innovation, electronics manufacturing, and global supply chains.

Boost to India’s AI and Cloud Ecosystem

Industry experts believe the Vizag AI hub will play a crucial role in advancing India’s capabilities in large-scale AI model training, cloud storage, and enterprise computing services. It is expected to support innovation across multiple sectors including healthcare, agriculture, education, finance, and governance, through advanced AI-driven applications.

The project is also being designed with a focus on sustainable infrastructure, with plans to integrate renewable energy sources to power the highly energy-intensive 1 GW data centre campus. This aligns with global sustainability standards for hyperscale digital infrastructure.

With construction already underway, the Visakhapatnam AI hub is being seen as a defining moment in India’s digital transformation journey. The project not only strengthens Andhra Pradesh’s position as a key investment destination but also marks a significant step toward establishing India as a global leader in artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure.
