The Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted a successful operational test involving fighter jets and military aircraft on an emergency airstrip created on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh, marking an important step in strengthening India’s defence preparedness and rapid response capabilities.
The exercise was carried out on a designated stretch of the Lucknow–Sultanpur section of the expressway, where the IAF evaluated the road’s suitability to function as a temporary runway for both fighter jets and transport aircraft during emergency or wartime situations. Officials confirmed that the drill included both take-off and landing operations, demonstrating the practical usability of the expressway for military aviation purposes.
This initiative is part of a larger national defence strategy under which selected expressways and highways across India are being developed or modified to serve as emergency landing strips for military aircraft. The Purvanchal Expressway has been identified as one of the key corridors due to its strategic design, long straight stretches, and structural strength.
According to defence officials, the exercise highlighted the operational flexibility of the Indian Air Force, showcasing its ability to quickly adapt from traditional airbases to highway-based runways when required. The successful test also underlines the coordinated efforts between the IAF, state government authorities, and expressway management agencies, ensuring that safety standards and aviation requirements are properly maintained.
The use of highways as emergency airstrips is considered a significant enhancement to India’s defence infrastructure, particularly in regions where rapid deployment of air assets is critical during emergencies or conflict scenarios. Such facilities allow aircraft to operate closer to potential operational zones, thereby reducing response time and increasing strategic reach.
The Purvanchal Expressway, one of Uttar Pradesh’s major infrastructure projects, has previously been used for similar defence drills. These exercises typically involve temporary closure of specific highway sections and deployment of security forces and technical teams to ensure safe and controlled flight operations.
Officials further stated that the latest drill is part of routine preparedness training aimed at strengthening multi-domain operational capability and integration of civilian infrastructure into national defence systems.
With this successful exercise, the Indian Air Force has once again demonstrated its ability to effectively utilize dual-use infrastructure for strategic military purposes, reinforcing India’s focus on mobility, flexibility, and rapid deployment readiness in modern defence operations.
