Big Relief for Hyderabad Commuters: Free MMTS Rides Likely from June 2

Date:

Hyderabad: In a major push to strengthen public transport in the city, the Telangana government is planning to introduce free travel on MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport System) trains starting June 2, coinciding with Telangana Formation Day.

The proposed initiative aims to make Hyderabad the first city in India to offer completely free suburban rail travel for all passengers, marking a significant shift in urban mobility policy.

According to officials, the scheme is designed to reduce traffic congestion, cut pollution levels, and encourage citizens to shift from private vehicles to public transport. The move follows similar state-run welfare transport schemes already implemented in bus services.

Key Highlights of the Proposal:

  • Free MMTS travel for all commuters (men, women, and others)
  • Expected rollout on June 2 (Telangana Formation Day)
  • Plan submitted to South Central Railway (SCR) for approval
  • Likely implementation as a pilot project for one year
  • State government to compensate railway revenue losses (estimated around ₹10 crore annually)

Officials said the MMTS network, which currently sees lower ridership compared to pre-pandemic levels, will be revived through this initiative. The government also expects the scheme to ease pressure on roads and reduce dependence on private transport in Hyderabad.

However, the proposal is still under review. The South Central Railway has sought a formal agreement (MoU) and detailed operational guidelines before final approval. Railway authorities will also require clearance from the Railway Board.

If implemented, the scheme is expected to significantly boost MMTS usage and reshape daily commuting patterns in Hyderabad, especially during peak traffic hours.
