HYDRAA Steps In to Tackle Encroachments and Waste at Banjara Lake

Date:

Hyderabad, April 9: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has stepped in after reports of widespread encroachments, plastic dumping, and sewage inflow at Banjara Lake in Banjara Hills, raising concerns over the ecological health of the water body.

A field inspection led by HYDRAA officials revealed illegal constructions within the Full Tank Level (FTL) area, blocked access to nearby areas, and accumulation of solid waste and untreated sewage in the lake. Commissioner A. V. Ranganath said these activities have threatened the lake’s existence, once a clean water source for the city.

🔹 HYDRAA’s Action Plan
Survey and documentation of encroachments in coordination with irrigation and revenue authorities.
Transparent inquiry to hear both complainants and alleged encroachers before enforcement.
Restoration and rejuvenation plan for Banjara Lake, including development of surrounding areas into public parks.

Residents have welcomed the move, urging authorities to protect the lake and prevent further dumping. The agency also highlighted similar concerns at lakes in Mamidipalli, Shamshabad, including Ongoni Kunta, Kanakayya Kunta, Marrivanikunta, and Errakunta, which face threats from encroachments and blocked drainage channels.

HYDRAA emphasized that these steps are part of a broader initiative to safeguard Hyderabad’s lakes and public lands, prevent ecological degradation, and restore urban water bodies for community use.
