Prime Minister Modi Hails Charaideo Maidam’s UNESCO World Heritage Designation

New Delhi — Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his recent “Mann Ki Baat” broadcast, announced the prestigious inclusion of Charaideo Maidam in Assam as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This designation marks India’s 43rd entry on the World Heritage list and is a significant achievement for the Northeast region, being its first site to earn this recognition.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi shared the historical and cultural importance of Charaideo Maidam, which translates to “shining city on the hills.” He explained that the site, which served as the original capital of the Ahom dynasty, is renowned for its ancient burial mounds known as Maidams. These structures were used by the Ahom people to enshrine the remains of their ancestors and valuable belongings, reflecting their deep cultural heritage.

“This is a moment of great pride for our nation,” Modi said. “The recognition of Charaideo Maidam as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a testament to its historical significance and the rich cultural legacy of the Ahom dynasty. It highlights the diverse heritage of our country and showcases the importance of preserving and celebrating our history.”

The Prime Minister highlighted that this UNESCO designation will enhance the site’s visibility on the global stage, promoting tourism and attracting international visitors to Assam. “The inclusion of Charaideo Maidam in the World Heritage list will draw global attention and boost tourism in the region. It is an opportunity for people worldwide to experience the rich history and cultural heritage of Assam,” Modi noted.

Modi encouraged citizens to visit Charaideo Maidam and experience its historical and cultural splendor. “I urge everyone to include Charaideo Maidam in their travel plans. Visiting this site will offer a unique opportunity to connect with our history and appreciate the remarkable legacy of the Ahom dynasty,” he added.

The designation of Charaideo Maidam as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is expected to play a crucial role in promoting cultural tourism and ensuring the preservation of India’s diverse historical heritage. As the first site from Northeast India to achieve this status, Charaideo Maidam represents a significant milestone in the global recognition of the region’s cultural and historical importance.
