Hyderabad, Jun 27 (PTI) – The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Telangana unit has stirred controversy by demanding the suspension of Hyderabad MP and AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi from Parliament for his “Jai Palestine” chant during the oath-taking ceremony as a member of the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Party spokesperson N.V. Subash expressed strong disapproval over Owaisi’s action, questioning how a parliamentarian, who is a native of India, could invoke the name of a foreign country during such a solemn occasion. Subash argued that if Owaisi genuinely intended to advocate for Palestinians, there were appropriate forums available for such expressions.
“The oath-taking ceremony for newly-elected MPs is a sacred occasion where they pledge to protect and uphold the Constitution of India. Therefore, using this platform to raise the name of another country is completely unacceptable,” Subash asserted in a press release issued on Wednesday.
According to the BJP spokesperson, Owaisi’s conduct reflects a disregard for the responsibilities towards his constituency and community, prioritizing instead what he described as a pursuit of superficial popularity through international issues.
“The MP is least bothered about the welfare of his constituency or his own community but wanted to gain cheap popularity by raising the Palestine issue,” Subash criticized.
The BJP’s call for Owaisi’s suspension underscores escalating tensions over the use of parliamentary proceedings for geopolitical statements. The issue has ignited debate on the appropriate conduct expected from elected representatives during significant ceremonies such as oath-taking.
