The PM Vishwakarma Yojana, launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on September 17, 2023, is making notable strides in supporting artisans and craftspeople across India. This comprehensive scheme aims to provide holistic assistance to those working with their hands and tools, offering a range of benefits including recognition through PM Vishwakarma Certificates and ID Cards, skill upgradation, toolkit incentives, credit support, incentives for digital transactions, and marketing support.
The scheme has been implemented nationwide, including in Karnataka, where it has garnered significant attention. In Chikkaballapur district, there have been 97,356 applications received, with 17,696 successful registrations qualifying for the scheme’s benefits. This enthusiastic uptake highlights the critical support needed by local artisans and the positive impact of the PM Vishwakarma Yojana.
Additionally, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) is advancing its “Assistance to Training Institutions (ATI)” Scheme, which provides financial support to enhance the capacity of training institutions and to support skill development programs. This scheme operates on a demand-driven basis, with funds allocated as follows over the past three years and the current year (up to July 26, 2024):
- FY 2021-22: Rs. 47.96 crore
- FY 2022-23: Rs. 21.99 crore
- FY 2023-24: Rs. 13.76 crore
- FY 2024-25 (as of July 26, 2024): Rs. 5.25 crore
These funds are crucial in strengthening the infrastructure and capabilities of training institutions, thereby fostering skill development and entrepreneurship across the country.
In Karnataka, the Khadi industry continues to play a significant role in the state’s economy. For the fiscal year 2023-24, the industry reported a production value of Rs. 49,943.44 lakhs and provided employment to 27,612 individuals. The Khadi programme, managed by registered Khadi Institutions, supports the promotion of traditional handspun and handwoven fabrics while generating sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The combined efforts of the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, the ATI Scheme, and the Khadi industry initiatives illustrate the government’s commitment to empowering artisans, advancing skill development, and supporting traditional industries. These programs aim to foster economic growth, ensure the well-being of craftspeople, and promote sustainable practices across India.
