New Delhi — Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his recent “Mann Ki Baat” broadcast, announced the prestigious inclusion of Charaideo Maidam in Assam as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This designation marks India’s 43rd entry on the World Heritage list and is a significant achievement for the Northeast region, being its first site to earn this recognition.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi shared the historical and cultural importance of Charaideo Maidam, which translates to “shining city on the hills.” He explained that the site, which served as the original capital of the Ahom dynasty, is renowned for its ancient burial mounds known as Maidams. These structures were used by the Ahom people to enshrine the remains of their ancestors and valuable belongings, reflecting their deep cultural heritage.
“This is a moment of great pride for our nation,” Modi said. “The recognition of Charaideo Maidam as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a testament to its historical significance and the rich cultural legacy of the Ahom dynasty.
